Boston Bombings Raise Tension in Annapolis
Authorities responded to two reports of suspicious packages within 24 hours after the Boston Marathon bombing on Monday.

Within 24 hours after the Boston Marathon bombing, there were two reports of suspicious packages in Annapolis—one at a bridge in town on Monday night, and one at Mills-Parole Elementary School on Tuesday.
Neither incident proved to be a serious threat, but local authorities have said they are taking all threats very seriously.
Police department spokesperson Amy Miguez said there have been more calls for suspicious packages lately, and with first lady Michelle Obama visiting Annapolis Wednesday, officers are taking every precaution to ensure safety in the city.

Police department Chief Michael Pristoop said his officers are closely monitoring information following the bombings in Boston, and are staying in touch with federal and state agencies to monitor intelligence following the incident.
“Our officers are aware of the risks, and they will be extra vigilant and responsive as they patrol the streets of Annapolis. We are working closely with the City's Office of Emergency Preparedness and Risk Management,” Pristoop said.

The bombings in Boston have drawn more attention to such threats, but Annapolis Fire Department spokesman Dale Thompson said the department treats each incident the same.
“What happened in Boston has added to the tension, but the Annapolis Fire Department treats all suspicious packages with the utmost care, and they err on the side of them being the real deal,” Thompson said.
The fire department and the state fire marshal's office has jurisdiction on the scene of any reported suspicious package. The police department coordinates help and controls traffic at the scene, Miguez said.
