Police: Car Stolen En Route to Charity

A car that was in the process of being donated was stolen after being picked up by a tow truck, according to police.

On Friday, Annapolis police responded to a report of a stolen car. A 56-year-old woman had arranged for her inoperable 1994 Mercedez Benz to be donated to a charity, 1-800-VETS on May 31. A tow truck was to pick up the vehicle from a maintenance shop and deliver it to the donation location, according to the police report.

After waiting a week, the woman contacted the charity and was advised they had not received the car, according to the report. The maintenance shop said a white tow truck did arrive for the pick up on June 6, and its driver collected the title and keys from the shop's owner. The vehicle was loaded onto the truck and drove away.

The maintenance shop owner said he did not receive a receipt for the transaction.
