City Sets $600K Aside for Sidewalk Repairs

The sidewalk repairs should begin in late August, according to a press release from the city.

The mayor has plans to put some new funds to use with sidewalk replacement across the city.

Mayor Josh Cohen announced Tuesday that the city’s sale of $15 million in bonds for capital projects has been completed, and $600,000 of that amount was set aside specifically for sidewalk repairs, and $260,000 for sidewalk infill along city streets where sidewalks are still needed.

“Streets and sidewalks are a core responsibility of the city,” Cohen said in the release.  “Because of the steps we have taken over the past three years to put our fiscal house in order, we are now able to address the backlog of deferred maintenance that is evident across town.”

Bids for the sidewalk work went out the week of June 17. The bid includes work for the removal and replacement of concrete and brick sidewalks and concrete curbs and gutters. The replacement of topsoil, seeding and sediment control are also associated with the work.

The sidewalk and infill work are slated to begin in late August, according to the release.

While the city is tackling sidewalks, city officials have not forgotten about ongoing road resurfacing projects. Twelve streets were completed in the last fiscal year, with 32 streets slated for this fiscal year.

“Granada Avenue, Archwood Avenue and the unit block of Charles Street are first on the list for street resurfacing projects, which are scheduled to start in July,” according to the release.
