Deputies IDed After Fatal Chase Ends With 1 Dead, 3 Hurt In Anne Arundel County: Officials

HARWOOD, MD — Officials on Wednesday identified the deputies involved in a chase that started in Calvert County and ended with one dead and three hospitalized in Anne Arundel County. Authorities said the fleeing car crashed into a pick-up truck.

Investigators said Calvert County Sheriff’s Deputies Wyatt McDowell and Michael Lewis were involved in the chase.

McDowell is an 8-year veteran assigned to the criminal investigations bureau. Lewis is a 7-year veteran assigned to the patrol bureau.

Authorities aren't identifying the deceased, a juvenile girl. Investigators are withholding the late minor's name "in accordance with juvenile privacy laws. "

Calvert County Sheriff's deputies received multiple reports of car break-ins Monday around the Huntingtown area. Deputies were alerted to a car believed to be associated with the break-ins, a press release said.

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said deputies tried to stop the car in Huntingtown near Plum Point Road and Ridge Road around 5:35 a.m., but the car didn't stop.

Brown said deputies chased the car for 25 miles into Anne Arundel County, where it collided with a pick-up truck at the intersection of Birdsville Road and Solomons Island Road in Harwood.

The pick-up driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the attorney general said.

Brown said the three occupants of the fleeing car were also hospitalized.

The release said the front-seat passenger, the juvenile girl, died soon after.

The attorney general said the driver sustained critical injuries and the rear passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Brown's Independent Investigations Division is handling the case, as it does with all police-related deaths.

The deputies' body camera video is usually released within 20 business days. This can also be delayed for technical reasons or to conduct additional interviews and let relatives view the footage before it's released.
