Firefighters Squash Apartment Blaze, Nobody Hurt Or Displaced

Firefighters extinguished a rooftop blaze in Annapolis. The flames were contained within 20 minutes, so nobody was hurt or displaced.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Firefighters prevented flames on the roof of an apartment building from reaching any apartments Monday in Annapolis. Nobody was hurt or displaced during the blaze in the city's Eastport neighborhood.

Crews said they were called to the Nautilus Point apartment complex, located in the 600 block of Americana Drive, Monday around 3:40 p.m.

First responders said they found smoke coming from the elevator room on the roof of the six-story building.

Firefighters said they accessed the roof and contained the flames within 20 minutes.

The Annapolis Fire and Explosives Services Unit said it determined that a malfunctioning HVAC window unit in the elevator room caused the blaze.

Crews turned off power to the elevator as a precaution. It's unclear whether the fire caused damage to the elevator components.

The Annapolis Fire Department thanked the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and the Naval Support Activity Annapolis Fire Department for their assistance.
