Furloughs Could Delay Classes at USNA

Despite more than 200 forced teacher furloughs in August and September, classroom disruptions will be kept to a minimum, US Naval Academy official said.

The Capital-Gazette reported that 287 civilian faculty members would be on forced furlough for the first two months of classes this year, a result of cutbacks across the Department of Defense's budget.

Commander John Schofield, a US Naval Academy spokesman, told The Capital that any classes canceled would be effectively treated like a snow day, and any furloughs would be targeted for minimal disruptions.

Fall term for midshipmen begins in August, and the furlough period will end in September.
