Thieves Spend Thousands After Finding Wallets in Annapolis Bars

Thieves reportedly stole $1,120 in cash and charged thousands more on the owners' debit and credit cards.

Two women forgot their wallets at Annapolis clubs in the past month, which allowed thieves to steal $1,120 in cash and charge roughly $5,000 more on the stolen debit and credit cards.

A 24-year old woman reported her stolen wallet to police on Sunday, according to the Capital Gazette. She reportedly left the wallet at Armadillo’s on Dock Street early Friday morning and remembered it later that evening. After checking her bank statements, the woman found numerous charges on her debit card, including a transaction for $1,648 and another for $1,239.

The woman said her cellphone and $120 in cash were also in the wallet.

In a separate incident, a 25-year-old woman went to the police on Saturday, reporting her wallet that she had left at Acme Bar and Grill on Main Street a month ago, the newspaper reports. The wallet had $1,000 in cash, a bank card and a credit card inside.

The woman said she did not find the fraudulent charges totaling $500 on her credit card until several weeks later, according to the news outlet. She did not realize the credit card was inside the lost wallet.

Police are working with merchants where the fraudulent charges were made and trying to identify the thieves.
