$100K Lotto Win Surprises Prince George's Man On Superstitious Day

An Oxon Hill man was surprised when he won $100K on Dec. 13, a day considered unlucky by many.

OXON HILL, MD — On Friday the 13th of December, a Prince George's resident bought a Pick 5 ticket, but was doubtful it would pan out due to the superstitions surrounding that particular day. However, he ended up winning $100,000.

The Oxon Hill man was feeling lucky, he told Maryland Lottery officials, so he popped into Modern Liquors in Temple Hills to snag some games. The big winner played 50403 on a $1 straight bet for the Dec. 13 midday and evening drawings and purchased two separate tickets. He bought a couple of Box tickets as well. Later that night, he checked his tickets and was in for one huge surprise. On a day that’s considered unlucky by some, the man's numbers matched for a $50,000 win on each ticket in the midday drawing.

“I just started hollering,” he told lottery officials. “I knew what I saw, but I still didn’t believe it.”

The retired federal government employee decided to scan his tickets to confirm the big $100,000 combined win. He also won $1,200 on his Box bets. When visiting lottery headquarters to claim the big prize, he told lottery officials that he planned to pay bills with his windfall and will use some funds toward an already planned birthday trip this month.

Also a winner is Modern Liquors, located at 2358 Iverson Street in Temple Hills. The lottery retailer will receive a combined $1,000 lottery bonus for selling two $50,000-winning Pick 5 tickets.
