Bowie City Election Filing Deadline Nears

Considering a run for mayor or council member in the City of Bowie? You have until 5 p.m. Friday to file. 

To be eligible for the election, nominees must be at least 18-years-old and have lived within Bowie city limits for at least two years prior to the Nov. 5, 2013 election date. 

As of Wednesday, all six incumbent council members and the mayor had filed for reelection. City Clerk Awilda Hernandez said things have been pretty quiet on the filing front, with only one contested race in the city. Henri Gardner (District 3) is being challenged by Babatunde Alegbeleye. Alegbeleye's filing paperwork lists his address as in the 15000 block of Newcomb Lane.

Gardner is a relative newcomer to the Bowie City Council. He was appointed to fill the vacant District 3 seat in 2011, and then won the seat outright in the November 2011 election. He resides in the Essington community of Bowie. 

As of Thursday morning, Bowie's candidates for city council and the offices they are seeking are as follows:

• James L. Marcos, District 1 (incumbent)
• Diane M. Polangin, District 2 (incumbent)
• Henri Gardner, District 3 (incumbent)
• Babatynde Alegbeleye, District 3 (challenger)
• Isaac C. Trouth, III, District 4 (incumbent)
• Dennis Brady, At-large (incumbent)
• Todd M. Turner, At-large (incumbent)
