Snow Is In The Forecast So How Many Inclement Weather Days Does PGCPS Have Left?

There's 2 rounds of snow forecast in the coming days. How many inclement weather days does PGCPS have? What happens when they're used up?

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — With more snow and potentially slick roads in the short-term forecast, where does Prince George's County Public Schools sit as far as snow days?

So far this school year, PGCPS has canceled school for four days due to inclement weather. Those four days will be made up as follows, the school district told Patch:

  • Feb. 14 - make-up day 1: originally scheduled as a professional day for teachers, this day was identified in the school calendar as a potential make-up day and will now be an instructional day with schools open for students.
  • June 16-18 - make-up days 2-4: These three make-up days are built into the 2024-2025 school calendar at the end of the school year.

So what happens if a big storm slides into Maryland and requires additional inclement weather days?

March 17 will be converted into an instructional day as make-up day 5 if needed, PGCPS leaders told Patch.

"If inclement weather closings exceed five days, additional school days may need to be scheduled at the end of the school year," school district officials told Patch in an email.

Two rounds of snow are forecast in the coming days before part of the polar vortex dips into the Lower 48 states, bringing bitter and dangerously cold temperatures to Maryland.

Snow showers could bring a coating of snow to area roadways Thursday afternoon and evening, potentially disrupting the evening commute, according to the National Weather Service. Not much accumulation is possible, but grassy surfaces could see a light coating.

Another chance of snow is possible on Sunday and could follow light rain showers on Saturday. According to forecasters, the system could develop into a winter storm with the greatest chance for snowfall during the late morning hours into the afternoon.

"Some models have shown the potential for an inch or two of accumulation, but confidence in that is still pretty low," the Capital Weather Gang said in its latest forecast.
