Officer Indicted In Crash That Killed Bailiff

Anthony Coleman, 34, a Prince George's police officer, has been indicted in a July crash that killed Carlton Herndon, a bailiff.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A Prince George's County police officer has been indicted in a crash that happened along Route 301 this summer that killed Carlton Herndon, 56, a Prince George’s County District Court bailiff.

Anthony Coleman, 34, of Upper Marlboro has been indicted on negligent manslaughter involving a vehicle, criminally negligent manslaughter by vehicle, negligent homicide by auto while under influence, homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, driving or attempting to drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and handgun transport under the influence of alcohol, stated Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Tara H. Jackson.

The incident happened July 7 shortly before 8:40 p.m. Maryland state troopers from the Forestville Barrack responded to a crash on northbound Route 301 at Missouri Avenue. The on-scene preliminary investigation indicated that Herndon, who was driving a Nissan Maxima, was attempting to cross Route 301 and pulled onto northbound 301 when he was hit by a Ford F-250 truck driven by Coleman, 34, of Upper Marlboro, who was traveling on northbound Route 301 at Missouri Avenue. Herndon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. Coleman refused medical treatment at the scene.
