Pet Adoptions Resume At Prince George’s County Animal Services Facility

Pet adoptions have started up again at the county animal services facility and adoption center after battle a canine influenza outbreak.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Starting Wednesday, pet adoptions will resume at the Prince George’s County Animal Services Facility and Adoption Center. The facility has been closed due to an outbreak of canine influenza.

“We have consulted with our experts and have continued to test the dogs regularly, and at this time, we feel confident about our decision to reopen,” said Andrea Crooms, director of the department of environment. “The health of our pets is our main concern and we will aggressively monitor the situation."

While closed, the facility contained the outbreak of canine influenza, quarantining, treating and caring for the affected animals. It has continued to test for the diseases randomly and has received negative results from all the random tests.

The canine influenza virus is one of the viral causes of kennel cough. It does not affect humans but is highly contagious for dogs and can be fatal. To help reduce the spread of the disease, ASFAC encourages pet owners to limit visits to dog parks, doggie daycares, groomers and other public spaces where pets can have dog-to-dog contact.

During the soft reopening, virtual adoptions for dogs will be by appointment only. Cat and critter interactions will resume in person by appointment only. To view a list of adoptable animals, visit www.24petconnect.com and click on available dogs/cats/others.
