Prince George's Mailman Honored for Saving Life

The postal worker alerted a sleeping resident inside a burning Hyattsville duplex.

A letter carrier may have saved a Hyattsville resident’s life when he saw flames coming from a duplex that didn’t have a working smoke alarm.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department officials recently recognized the letter carrier for potentially saving a life.

On Jan. 8, while delivering mail in the 1900 block of Oliver Street in Hyattsville, mailman Kim Hopkins saw smoke coming from the second floor of a duplex. He saw no activity around the house and knocked on the door until the resident was awakened and escaped the burning building without injury.

Authorities say the home did not have a working smoke alarm.

“It is my pleasure to present you with a Fire Chief’s award,” Deputy Fire Chief James McClelland said to Hopkins. “Your actions speak well of you both personally and professionally, as well as demonstrates the great culture within the United States Postal Service.”
