FORT WASHINGTON, MD -- Police have arrested a teen who they say shot his girlfriend to death in Fort Washington last month, and then tried to make it look like she pulled the trigger.

Jamal Speaks, 19, of Palmer Park is accused of shooting 18-year-old Saniyah Floyd of Capitol Heights, according to a report from the Prince George's County Police Department.

Police were called to the 13000 block of Buchanan Drive at around 10:30 p.m. on April 7 and found Floyd in a bedroom suffering from a single gunshot wound, the report states. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Initially, responding officers and detectives were advised by witnesses that the victim accidentally shot herself," the report adds. "An autopsy revealed that her wound could not have been self-inflicted, and the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide."

Police determined that Speaks had illegally purchased the gun and had been playing with it throughout the day, and then later in the evening he shot the victim once, placing the gun in her hand to make it look like she had shot herself, the report claims.

"He has admitted his involvement in this incident," police said. "Detectives presented the evidence to a Prince George’s County court commissioner and Speaks was charged with first degree murder, second degree murder, assault and weapons charges. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status."
