Tip a Cop Thursday at Texas Roadhouse in Bowie

Bowie's finest will be refilling drinks and serving up rolls at Texas Roadhouse in Bowie Thursday night as part of an fundraiser for the city's Police Explorers program. 

The Explorers are a youth organization that exposes kids ages 14 to 20 to different aspects of the police department. Explorers learn about police procedures, the importance of good citizenship and assist with police events. 


"It's a way of giving them an idea of what we do, and to help them become better citizens," Bowie Police Chief John Nesky said. 

About four to five officers and explorers will be assisting Texas Roadhouse servers from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, refilling drinks, handing out bread baskets and whatever else in needed. The

"We leave an envelope on the table and if there is anything you want to tip your cop outside of what you leave for your waters and waitresses, it will go to the Explorers," Nesky said.

Patrons can also bring in one of these coupons, and ten percent of the cost of dinner, takeout or gift cards will go to the Explorers, and Texas Roadhouse has agreed to match those contributions, Nesky said. 

"It's a great partnership," Nesky said. "The city provides seed money for uniforms, but a lot of the activities are funded by the Explorers themselves." 

One of these activities is an out-of-state competition, wherein Bowie's Explorers compete with Explorers from other cities in a variety of activities.

Currently, the Bowie Police Department has about 15 Explorers, Nesky said. This is the second year the department has participated in the Tip a Cop program with Texas Roadhouse.
