Metrobus Service, Schedule Changes to Take Effect Sunday

The changes fall in line with Metro's BetterBus initiative, which seeks to improve service and reliability for customers in the area.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced earlier this week that as of Sunday, June 21, some Metrobus schedules and service will be adjusted on certain routes.

The changes fall in line with Metro’s Better Bus initiative, which seeks “to improve service and reliability for customers throughout the region,” according to a WMATA news release.

Among the service changes slated to take effect beginning Sunday are the following (according to the release):

  • Route E3 service will be eliminated: Route E2 will now operate between Ivy City and the Fort Totten Metrorail station. Route E4 will continue to operate between Friendship Heights Metrorail station and Riggs Park. Additionally, Route E4 will have short trips operating between Friendship Heights and Fort Totten Metrorail stations.
  • Route U2 will be replaced by new routes V2 and V4: Route V2 provides service between Capitol Heights and Anacostia Metrorail stations. Route V4 provides service between Capitol Heights and Navy Yard-Ballpark Metrorail stations.
  • Routes V7, V8 and V9 service will be replaced by NEW routes U7, V1, and V4: During the weekday peak period, route V1 operates between Benning Heights and the Bureau of Engraving. Route U7 will operate between Deanwood and Minnesota Avenue Metrorail stations.
  • Metro will no longer operate route W15: It is now operated by TheBus as route 37.
  • Route NH1 will be rerouted to Southern Avenue Metrorail station: The route will no longer serve the Branch Avenue Metrorail station. NH3 trips will operate as NH1 trips.

WMATA reports there will be additional bus scheduling and service changes to particular routes throughout Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The following changes will take effect beginning Sunday to these routes Maryland-based routes (according to the release):

81, 82, 83, 86 College Park: New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

87 Laurel Express: A new southbound weekday trip will depart Main Street and Washington Boulevard in Laurel at 9 a.m. and end at Cypress Street and Laurel Lakes Avenue at 9:17 a.m. to improve service to the Towne Centre at Laurel.

89 Laurel: New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

B24, B25 Bowie-Belair: A new weekday eastbound route B25 trip will depart New Carrollton Metrorail station at 5:50 a.m. for improved service to Bowie.

K11, K12, K13 Forestville: New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to improve service.

NH1, NH3 National Harbor: Route NH1 will be rerouted to serve Southern Ave Metrorail station and operate via Southview Apartments. Service to Branch Ave Metrorail station will be discontinued. All route NH3 trips will operate as NH1 trips.

P12 Eastover-Addison Road: Route P12 will be rerouted between District Heights and Addison Road Metrorail station via Walker Mill Road & South Addison Road. Service via Walker Mill Road, Shady Glen Drive and Central Avenue will be provided by route V12. Route P12 will no longer loop through United Medical Center. Buses will remain on Southern Avenue.

P17, P18, P19 Oxon Hill-Fort Washington: Route P18 trips will be rerouted to serve Southern Avenue Metrorail station via Southern Avenue. Service to South Capitol Street, Firth Sterling Avenue and Anacostia Metrorail station will be discontinued.

V12 District Heights-Suitland: Route V12 will be rerouted between District Heights and Addison Road Metrorail station via Walker Mill Road, Shady Glen Drive and Central Avenue. Service along South Addison Road will be provided by route P12.

W13, W14 Bock Road: Route W14 trips will be rerouted to serve Southern Ave Metrorail station via Southern Avenue. Service to South Capitol Street, Firth Sterling Avenue and Anacostia Metrorail station will be discontinued.

W15 Camp Springs-Indian Head Highway: This route will no longer be operated by Metro. It will now operate as route 37 by TheBus.
