Edgewater Marine Killed on Memorial Day in Afghanistan

Sgt. Julian Chase, 22, died while serving in Helmand province of Afghanistan on Monday.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced Wednesday that an Edgewater marine was killed on Memorial Day while serving in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Julian Chase, 22, of Edgewater, died Monday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan, according to a press release.

Tom Chase, the marine's father, said in an interview with ABC2 News that his son was carrying a large 25 to 30 pound machine gun with about 400 rounds of ammunition when he was killed.

Tom Chase also told reporters that serving in the Marines was something Julian wanted to do since he was 14 or 15 years old. 

Julian Chase's unit plans to visit his familiy and friends in Edgewater sometime this summer, ABC2 News reported
