Character Counts! Contest Winners Announced
More than 420 students created written and graphic works celebrating the six pillars of character.

From the City of Gaithersburg: To celebrate the 20th anniversary of CHARACTER COUNTS! in Gaithersburg, more than 420 students created written and graphic works celebrating the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Essay, photo and poster contest winners and honorable mentions will be recognized at a special CHARACTER COUNTS! awards ceremony and reception on Wednesday, May 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Gaithersburg Middle School. The reception will also serve as the culmination of a year’s worth of celebratory activities for the 20th anniversary of Gaithersburg’s involvement with this impactful ethics program. The event is open to the public.
This year’s poster contest, “Caring and Citizenship in my Community,” was open to Gaithersburg area elementary and middle school students. Inspiring entries were received from 331 students.

A photo contest with the same theme was open to middle and high school students. The winner is Rachel Coates, a senior at Gaithersburg High School.
The “Adult Heroes in Our Community” essay contest, co-sponsored by the Gaithersburg Rotary Club, was open to elementary and middle school students. Eighty nine participants wrote about someone who has had a positive, personal influence on their lives, tied to the Six Pillars of Character.
