The Elijah Jamal Balbed Quartet is a straight-ahead, socially conscious jazz group led by saxophonist, composer and activist Elijah Jamal Balbed. The Quartet will perform selections from Balbed’s recently composed "The Karma Suite," featuring compositions inspired by the various political and social injustices that exist in this country and around the world. The Quartet's goal is to express their concerns through their music, and use that music to send out healing energy to those struggling in the world.
Saxophonist and composer Elijah Jamal Balbed is a native of Washington, DC, and currently resides in New York. He’s been named Best Tenor Saxophonist (2013) and Best New Jazz Musician (2010) by the Washington City Paper, and has participated in residencies at the Kennedy Center, Strathmore, Bohemian Caverns, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center in Doha, Qatar. Over the last decade, he has established himself as a versatile saxophonist, having performed with Nicholas Payton, Cyrus Chestnut, Lalah Hathaway, the New Orleans jazz/funk legend Dr. John, and the late, great, Godfather of Go-Go music, Mr. Chuck Brown.
