Local 'Career Criminal' Gets 15 Years For Illegal Possession of a Gun

A Gaithersburg man described by authorities as a "career criminal" was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a gun, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

Everett Floyd Jenkins, 51, was previously convicted of second degree murder, attempted distribution of heroin and distribution of heroin.

According to the DOJ, Jenkins was pulled over by Montgomery County police while traveling on Lost Knife Road on Dec. 24, 2011. As one officer spoke with Jenkins at the driver’s window, a second officer approached the car on the passenger side and saw the handle of a handgun sticking out of Jenkins’ pants pocket. 

Police removed Jenkins from the car and the loaded, 9mm semi-automatic pistol was recovered from his pocket. The gun was found to be stolen in Alabama in 2002-2003, according to the DOJ.

Court documents show Jenkins had been driving under the influence of alcohol. His arrest was triggered by a concerned citizen who witnessed Jenkins driving erratically on I-270 and striking a barrier, the DOJ said.
