The Emergency Operations Center will partially activate at 6 a.m. and a total of 174 dump trucks and other vehicles were on the roads as of 5 a.m., according to a press release from County Executive John R. Leopold.
According to the release, sensors showed roads were at or slightly below freezing at 5 a.m. and the main roads were wet, with some being snow or slush covered. Residential streets were snow covered, but should be mostly passable. Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving this morning for expected slippery road conditions.
Leopold's office shared these snow safety tips for county residents to keep in mind:
- Park all vehicles in a driveway whenever possible. If off-street parking is not available, please work with your neighbors to park all vehicles on one side of the road only.
- Children should be cautioned to stay clear of plows and other heavy equipment, and drivers should do the same to allow them to do their work.
- Clearing of sidewalks and removal of ice is the responsibility of each resident.
- Remove all recycling containers, trash cans and other obstacles from the street.
- Use patience—plowing operations are prioritized to get motorists moving as quickly as possible.
- Maintain a safe following distance on the roadways during slick conditions, maintain low speeds and turn on your headlights to increase visibility.
- Brake gently to avoid skidding.
