Greenbelt Library Offers Banned Books

During Banned Books Week, the Greenbelt Library takes a stand for intellectual freedom.

The top 10 list is in on the most challenged books in schools, libraries and bookstores for 2010.

There have been more than 11,000 books challenged since 1982. Last year there were 348, according to the American Library Association.

This week is Banned Books Week across the country. Hundreds of libraries and bookstores have taken a stand against censorship.

The Greenbelt Library has selected some of the top 100 classics that have been banned or challenged during the 20th century and placed them in a display for check out.

Among them are "Catcher in the Rye," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Lord of the Flies," "The Sun Also Rises," "Ulysses," some Harry Potter books and the Bible, said Greenbelt Library branch manager Ellen Utley.

She said the library is not saying that people should read these books, that's their choice. But rather they look at it as the library supporting intellectual freedom.
