There was a female on an outside upper ledge of the house and a man at a window with a long gun when police arrived, authorities said.

LAUREL, MD — A man is dead after police fired shots at him when he refused to drop the gun he was holding during a domestic disturbance in Laurel, according to authorities.

Howard County police responded around 3:10 p.m. Saturday to a house in the 10000 block of American Pharoah Lane where they found a female on an outside upper ledge and the man at a window in the home with a long gun, authorities said.

The person who called 911 said a man was banging at the home's front door. A preliminary investigation indicates the man fired several shotgun rounds at the front door and made his way inside the home through a window. When Howard County police officers arrived, the man appeared in a second-floor window of the home. Officers told the man to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so.
