BGE Warns of Potential Power Outages From Winter Storm

A winter storm warning is in effect until 7 a.m. and could cause power outages after last weekend’s heavy winds.

Trees and branches may be more susceptible to breaking, causing outages for Odenton and Anne Arundel County residents, according to a release from Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE).  

“The combination of ice and heavy wet snow will weigh down trees and tree limbs—many of which were weakened by last week’s windstorm—causing them to fall onto power lines and other electric delivery equipment and interrupting electric service,” according to the release.

The prediction for power outages comes after hundreds of in January following a winter storm with wet and heavy snow.

Marylanders got a tease of spring last week with temperatures exceeding 70 degrees, but winter looks set to rear its ugly head as the National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting sleet and up to 8 inches of snow from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The NWS predicts the precipitation will begin as sleet and then turn into snow around midnight, with the heaviest portions coming between 1 and 5 a.m.

The warning also indicates a possibility of heavy winds, a factor that could cause serious power outages throughout the area.

BGE said crews are closely monitoring the storm and preparing a plan of action should the storm produce heavy amounts of precipitation.

“While BGE is prepared to begin restoring electric service as safely and as quickly as possible, hazardous road conditions will extend the travel times of restoration crews which could extend outage durations,” said A. Christopher Burton, senior vice president of gas and electric operations and planning for BGE in the written statement. “We thank our customers in advance for their cooperation and understanding.”

With hundreds of thousands losing power in Maryland’s , BGE reminded residents to prepare for the worst.

“Just as BGE prepares for severe weather and the possibility of power outages, customers should also be prepared and take steps to ensure the safety of their families and property during electric service interruptions,” the release stated.

BGE also recommended having these items on hand when the storm hits, as reports are indicating a 100 percent chance of precipitation: 

• Flashlights – not candles
• Fresh batteries
• Battery-operated clock radio
• Corded telephone
• Fully charged cell phone
• Non-perishable foods
• Blankets
