Firefighters Evacuate Area Due to Gas Leak by Arundel Mills

Thirteen units are on the scene, including a hazardous material team.

A gas leak on a construction site near Arundel Mills has forced firefighters to evacuate all buildings within a half-mile radius of the incident, according to Anne Arundel Fire Department spokesman Capt. James Rostek.

Firefighters received a report around 9:05 a.m. Tuesday that a propane tank had tipped or fallen on or near a construction site, said Rostek.

Located near Arundel Mills Boulevard, it appeared only a small number of people were forced to evacuate due to the leak’s location. An under-construction Olive Garden and other unopened establishments were the closest buildings to the centralized location of the firefighters.

About 13 units were tending the leak including a hazardous material crew, Rostek said. “The [hazardous material] team is on the scene and assessing the situation.”

When one firefighter was approached by a passerby about the estimated conclusion of the incident, he said, “Should be within the hour.”
