Mascot March Madness, Crystal Meth and a Call for Infrastructure

A brief look back at the week that was.

One Severn Patch reader casually acknowledged the absurdity of stealing school lunches, but it was enticing enough for two teenagers who were last Monday at Fort Meade. 

After activating an alarm at MacArthur Middle on the base, police responded to the incident and found two boys fleeing the scene. Police dogs were used to search for additional perpetrators but none were found.

Lacrosse, baseball, track and field, each sport is synonymous with spring, but for some special students at Old Mill, a is being offered.

The Patriots, as well as other Anne Arundel County high schools, are creating bocce ball teams to engage students with learning disabilities.

The simple game that only requires a few balls per player and one smaller ball allows students who would otherwise be unable to perform in sports, an opportunity to shine for the Patriots. The hope is to get the students involved in new ways while increasing their engagement with the rest of the student body.

Gov. O'Malley has backed a that could harshen the penalties for gun carriers who break the law. It seems that law-abiding individuals would see little or no changes in their right to bear arms, but the topic created plenty of on Severn Patch. 

While legislators in Maryland discussed new gun laws, Anne Arundel County detectives arrested two men linked with the murder of a in Meade Village. The men are charged with stabbing Ghulam Farooq, 46, as he was delivering goods in the housing development. 

The arrested men, both teenagers, are being charged with first- and second-degree murder. 

From the Lab

Police seized about in crystal methamphetamine from two Severn men Wednesday. 

After searching through a suspicious package and staging a pick up, detectives collected around 71 grams of crystal meth from a home on Sage Brook Court in Severn. 

Where the Streets Have No Name

Fort Meade hosted a massive job fair Wednesday morning where around 1,200 citizens came together to apply for the 60,000 positions created from BRAC.

The event possessed an atmosphere of excitement and potential, but Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) offered some words of caution, citing a as an equally vital aspect of BRAC growth.

Quality of life was the name of the game for Ruppersberger in an interview with Severn Patch, and the congressman was quick to remind citizens of the several hundred million dollar gap between what is needed for new roads and what is actually allocated.

March Madness kicked off last week, and Severn Patch's editor released his picks. However, instead of picking teams on performance, he chose them based on the mascot's fighting ability.
