Severn Woman Killed in Accident in Annapolis
Ajia Marketta Owens, 18, died after being struck at the intersection of Solomons Island Road and West Street.

A young woman from Severn has died after being struck by a Jeep Wrangler in when trying to cross a street in Annapolis Friday night.
Anne Arundel County Police responded to the crash at around 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of Solomons Island Road (Maryland Route 2) and West Street.
Police said that Ajia Marketta Owens, 18, was trying to cross Solomons Island Road, from east to west, on the north side of the intersection at West Street. While trying to cross, she ran in front of two vehicles traveling northbound on Solomons Island Road.

One driver managed to narrowly avoid hitting Owens, police said, but the driver of a Jeep Wrangler was unable to avoid her, striking her with the right front corner of the Jeep.
Owens was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver of the Jeep was identified as Johnathan Paul Shipp of Edgewater.
According to police, there is no evidence that Shipp was speeding or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. However, police said Owens was wearing dark clothing and was not crossing the street in the crosswalk. Police also said that Shipp had a green light.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
