Tommy Bromwell's Prison Sentence Could End Early 2013

Former State Sen. Thomas Bromwell could be released from prison as early as February.

Bromwell, 63, is serving the last nine months of an 84-month sentence for racketeering, conspiracy and filing a false tax return at the Federal Correctional Institution at Morgantown West Virginia.

By law, a federal prisoner is eligible for release at any point in the last year of their sentence, according to Chris Burke, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Prisons.

But Bromwell, who was sentenced in November 2007, could come home before completing his full term in August 2013.

Del. Eric Bromwell said Thursday that his father could be home as soon as February.

"That's subject to possible change, but that's what we're hoping," said Bromwell.

Thomas Bromwell served in the Maryland Senate for two decades representing the Perry Hall and Parkville area and was chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. He was found guilty of using his influence to secure a multi-million dollar state contract and intervene in business disputes on behalf of Poole & Kent, a contractor. 

In return, the contractor provided a no-show job for Mary Patricia Bromwell, the senator's wife and paid her nearly $193,000. The contractor also performed more than $80,000 work on the Bromwell's home.

Mary Patricia Bromwell received a one year and one day sentence for federal mail fraud related to a minority-contracting fraud scheme.

David Stoffregen, a Towson resident and president of Poole & Kent, was also convicted of racketeering conspiracy, mail fraud and filing a false tax return.

Six others also pleaded guilty to charges related to the federal investigation.

Burke, the federal prison spokesman, said he could not confirm Thomas Bromwell's exact date of release. So far, the former state senator has earned more than 216 days credit toward shortening his sentence.

Thomas Bromwell could be transferred to a half-way house or be given home confinement, Burke said.
