LOOK: A Labor of Love

In a message to Perry Hall Patch, Irene Grabau requested Patch share these photos and the story behind the garden maintained by her father, Gus Fotis, at his home at 5125 Forge Rd. in Perry Hall:

Please consider featuring my father's garden not only for its beauty but also for the love and nurturing he has given it. Before my mother died, the garden was something they enjoyed together. Now that she is gone, it keeps my father connected to her spirit.  
 
When they first moved to this home, they eyed the barren half acre of land with tired eyes wondering how much upkeep would be required. They soon found that they enjoyed the land. Working together, they started to give the garden its form. Slowly, they began to add gorgeous topiaries, exotic statues, columns and paved walkways. It has been four years since my mother's passing but my father has continued...giving the garden a life of it's own! 

Pedestrians linger as they pass the private oasis and neighbors walk about just to escape reality for a few moments. There are many details that still after years of visiting I have just now noticed. Additions are always made including separate gardens for each grandchild with specially made signs that include their names.  The most recent addition is a sign that hangs prominently on his largest trellis and reads "Anthipi's Garden." Anthipi was his wife and my mother and her memory is eternal in our hearts and in this garden.
