ROCKVILLE, MD — Sixteen shelter dogs displaced by Hurricane Laura have arrived safely at Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) in Derwood, officials announced Thursday.

The Morehouse Humane Society, a pet shelter located in Bastrop, Louisiana, was damaged when when the Category 4 storm tore through the region.

"(The shelter) has been out of power since Aug. 27 and, despite generators and fans running, the area has been under a heat advisory. The dogs desperately needed a safe place," said MCASAC.

The Derwood shelter agreed to take all of Morehouse's dogs while the building gets repaired.

Each dog is being evaluated medically and behaviorally before being made available for adoption, according to MCASAC. Prior to adoption, all dogs are altered, microchipped, and given basic vaccines.
