ROCKVILLE, MD — Face masks now must cover you mouth, nose, and chin in Montgomery County.

On Monday, the Montgomery County Council unanimously passed an executive order that updated the rules on face coverings. Previously, face coverings — bandanas, scarfs, medical-grade masks — only had to cover a person's nose and mouth.

Like the previous executive order, this one requires everyone to wear a mask in public unless they are:

  • Children under the age of two or have a developmental or physical reason
  • Have a health condition or disability that makes it difficult to wear a face covering

A face covering is required in various public settings, including:

  • On public transportation
  • Indoors at any location where members of the public are generally permitted, such as
    • Common areas in apartment and condo buildings
    • Supermarkets
    • Retail stores
    • Gyms and fitness centers
    • Hair salons, barbershops, and other personal services establishments
    • Pools (except when in the water)
    • Religious facilities and services
    • Gaming facilities
    • Restaurants and other food service establishments
    • Doctors and dentists' offices, hospitals, pharmacies, and other medical facilities
  • Outdoors (when physical distancing isn't possible)
