Rockville Man Wins $1M Prize In Lottery

The latest local lottery win is a Rockville man who purchased a winning $1 million prize ticket in the Virginia Lottery.

ROCKVILLE, MD — A Rockville man won the $1 million prize in the Virginia Lottery after purchasing a ticket at a grocery store, lottery officials announced.

Jon Locke went to the Food Lion on West Broad Street in Manakin Sabot, Va. to purchase laundry detergent. He decided to buy a $100 Million Cash Extravaganza ticket and took it out to his car to scratch it.

“Something told me to play,” he told lottery officials.

Locke realized he won the $1 million prize while sitting in his car.

"My knees buckled," Locke said. “I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet."

Locke had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $681,000 before taxes. He chose the cash option and said he will save his winnings to take care of his family.

The $100 Million Cash Extravaganza game features prizes ranging from $20 up to $4 million. The $1 million prize that Locke won is actually the second prize. He is the third $1 million winner to claim, which means a one million-dollar ticket remains unclaimed.

The chances of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 1,836,000. The chances of winning any prize are 1 in 2.71, lottery officials said.

Locke bought the winning ticket in Goochland County, which received more than $275,000 in lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. For more information and a complete list of lottery funds to Virginia school districts, click here.

The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
