5 Things You Need to Know Today: Sept. 2, 2011

Happy Friday, Silver Spring! Here are five things you need to know as you start your Labor Day weekend.

Good Morning! What five things do you need to know to stay up-to-date about what’s going on in the community? Patch has you covered this Friday:

  1. Today, there may be a slight chance of showers during your morning commute. It will be partly sunny throughout the day with a high of 82 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The weather should cool down later in the day to 67 degrees.
  2. Take the kids over to the B&O railroad station for a look at 30 years of Silver Spring history told through photographs. There is also a 10-foot by 10-foot train model where the kids can see the train go through a model town. How cool is that? 
  3. Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of the Discovery hostage crisis. Silver Spring Patch took a look back at that day and featured a story on , the owner of Augie’s Doggies hot dog stand who warned people to stay away from the building, created a  and more.
  4. The Maryland State Fair ends in a few days, so take the family while you still can. It features rides, animals and hours of other entertainment. Prices are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (62 and older). Children ages 6 to 11 are $3, and children 5 and younger are free.
  5. will feature a free Portuguese wine tasting from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tonight.
