5 Things You Need to Know Today: Sept. 20, 2011

Here are five things you need to know as you start your Tuesday.

Happy Tuesday, Silver Spring! Here are five things to know today, to help you keep up-to-date about what’s going on in the community:

1. Throughout the day you can expect cloudy skies, but during your afternoon commute scattered showers and thunderstorms are a high possibility, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures may rise near 78 degrees. Into the evening, showers are likely, with temperatures dropping to about 60.

2. Enjoy a performance on Veterans Plaza, which is located at One Veterans Place (across from the Majestic movie theater). Performances have included Groove Jet, Cloud 9, the 2nd Story Band, Snakehead Run, and more. The show starts at 7 p.m.

3. If you have time, stop by the . The competition is open to everyone in the Washington metro area ages 50 and older. The men's tournament starts today at 10 a.m. and goes through Thursday, Sept. 22. The women's tournament started at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 19.

4. The Silver Spring Regional Center needs a volunteer to serve as a communications team member. This person would be responsible for  consistent and regular attention to websites, e-blasts, blog, Facebook page, calendar, contact lists, and meeting notices.
