1. SHOW BIZ KIDS COMPETE TO WIN

Where/When: The event will take place Sunday, Sept. 18, at One Veterans Place in Silver Spring (near the Majestic Theater).

Why Go: Young children in the Washington metropolitan area have a chance to showcase their talents at this family-oriented event.

Pricing: Pre-show tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets for the main show are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

Where/When: Docs in Progress, which is located on 8700 First Avenue in Silver Spring, is conducting a production class focused on making a documentary on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 9 a.m.

Why Go: The class includes a hands-on experience that will allow you to focus on how to plan, shoot and edit a documentary film. Participants will also gain a familiarity with screen language, sequencing, and experience with digital video cameras.

Pricing: Advance registration required and the series of six classes cost between $550 and $575.

3. ADOPT AN INTERNATIONAL CHILD

Where/When: Pay a visit to the Free International Adoption Fair, which is located at 8555 16th St. Ste. 600 in Silver Spring. The fair is on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: To explore the opportunity of adopting children from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and more. You will also have the opportunity to meet parents who have already gone through the adoption process.

Pricing: Free.

Where/When: 1327 Fenwick Ln., Silver Spring. The tasting is Friday, Sept. 16, from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Join the tasting event, "Falling Out of Summer," to explore a variety of wine this season. This week you can sample Cline Viognier 2010 which has peach, orange blossoms, and honeysuckle; Cline Ancient Vine Mourvedre 2010, with a hint of eucalyptus, chocolate, and plum flavors; Campos de Viento Tempranillo 2009 which has fresh flavors such as strawberries and fresh herbs; and Vina Falernia Syrah Reserva 2007, which is a dark-colored wine with blackberry and plum.

5. MACRO METAMORPHOSES PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

Where/When: Christ Congregational Church, 9525 Colesville Rd. in Silver Spring.

Why Go: Take a trip to The Wolters/Simon photo presentation, which is the first exhibition of the 2011-2012 season in the church's Tate Gallery.
