Local Artists Featured In Silver Spring Gallery: PHOTOS

The Shape of Things to Come, a contemporary art exhibit in Silver Spring, showcases the work of four sculptors from Montgomery County.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A new art exhibition in Silver Spring is highlighting the work of four Montgomery County sculptors.

The exhibit, called The Shape of Things to Come, showcases the works of Shelley Picot, Gretchen Schermerhorn, Amare Selfu, and Vidya Vijayasekharan. Their sculptures — which will be on display through April 15 — were inspired by today's politics, environment, and attitudes, according to the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County.

Amina Cooper, Manager of Public Art and External Affairs for AHCMC, curated the exhibit and said she wanted to turn the idea of what a sculpture looks like on its head.

"I've been seeing, over time, that there are local artists that are doing really, really cool things in ceramics, with plastic, with materials that you wouldn't necessarily associate with sculpture," Cooper said. "So I wanted this show to reflect contemporary sculpture in terms of material and approach, but also have artists working in sculpture that are integrating contemporary ideas and current events into their work. The four artists that are featured in this show do that."

Art enthusiasts can check out the exhibit on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Shape of Things to Come is located in the Silver Spring Civic Building at One Veterans Place.
