SILVER SPRING, MD — A Silver Spring resident who casually plays big lottery games, including Mega Millions and Powerball, decided to try something new and won $31,233. The woman, who was out with friends, placed a Racetrax trifecta bet on six races to win the big purse.

The July 4 holiday had just passed and the public health worker joined a group of friends at the Town Center Market in Riverdale that Friday for food, drinks and fun.

“I wanted to try something different,” the single mother of two told the Maryland Lottery. “So, I went to the machine and played Racetrax.”

The winner placed a $6 Trifecta bet for the horses 12, 10 and 11 to cross the finish line in that exact order. She went back to the table with her friends and wasn’t paying attention when her races occurred and completely missed seeing her winning game.

“My friends urged me to check my ticket, so I went to the scanner,” she said. “I was shocked when I saw the amount because I have never won that amount of money ever.”

She shared the good news with her friends, and bought drinks for everyone at her table.

The Montgomery County resident claimed her prize last week at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. She told Lottery officials that she plans to use some of the winnings for her son’s college tuition and will also use some money to update her home.

Town Center Market at 4705 Queensbury Road in Riverdale, which sold the winning ticket, will receive a $312.33 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more.
