SILVER SPRING, MD — A Prince George's County man died Sunday morning when his van went off the Capital Beltway and struck trees in Montgomery County, according to Maryland State Police.

The victim has been identified as Manual Lopez-Castillo, 32, of Fairmount Heights. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital in Virginia, where he was later pronounced dead, a state police news release said.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack were called to westbound Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) near Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring for a report of a single-vehicle crash. Investigators said a Ford Econoline van was westbound on I-495 when, for unknown reasons, it veered off the roadway and crashed into trees.

Lanes were closed for about six hours for the crash investigation. Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with the lane closure.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation.
