Quick Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe During the Storm

Have emergency supplies and phone numbers handy.

, Silver Spring veterinarian Dr. Nitin Singh from Banfield Pet Hospital is urging pet owners to plan for their pets too.

  • Make sure each pet has their space. A pet carrier or crate for each pet in the family is a good idea. Familiarize your pet with the crate ahead of time in case they need to be transported on short notice. Consider a crate that is self-contained and will safely house your pet and their food and water.
  • Keep medical records handy. Be sure your pet’s vaccinations are current and that you have information regarding any special medical need your pet has.
  • Pack medical supplies. Have a small disaster kit for your pet-including a week’s supply of food and water as well as any medication your pet may needs. You can store this in a plastic storage tote and change out the contents regularly.
  • Have a safe place for them. Your pet should have a place to go take your pet in the event you must evacuate your home. If your home is not safe for you, it is likely not safe for your pet. You should familiarize yourself with local boarding facilities and hotels which allow pets. Keep this contact information with your disaster kit and put it in a place that is easily assessable for all family members.
  • An injured pet is not a happy one. If they are severely injured take precautions to prevent yourself from getting bit when trying to help. An injured and frightened pet will bite as a way to protect itself—this includes biting the owner. Approach an injured pet cautiously and if possible, at their level. Always leave enough distance so that you can’t get hurt. Standing over a pet is a very dominant and can be perceived as an aggressive gesture which will make a pet more frightened and possibly more likely to bite.
