65+ MPH Winds Cause Logan Airport Ground Stop, Alerts Across MA

The whipping winds caused flights to come to a halt at Logan Airport on Tuesday morning.

MASSACHUSETTS — Wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour or higher caused a ground stop at Logan Airport on Tuesday morning as the National Weather Service issued a High Wind Alert for parts of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Northwest winds were steady between 10 and 20 mph on Tuesday morning with gusts to 45. The NWS said gusts up to 65 mph or higher were possible across Massachusetts with a Wind Advisory issued through 7 p.m.

A High Wind Watch was also issued for Wednesday night through Thursday morning.

"Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines," the NWS said. "Power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and some power outages may result."

There were 755 power outages reported across Massachusetts as of 10 a.m.

Two of the high-speed ferries between Cape Cod and the Islands were also canceled on Tuesday morning.

The High Wind Watch is set to begin on Wednesday at 10 p.m. and extend through Thursday at 8 a.m.

The winds will make it feel much colder than the high temperature of 55 degrees on Tuesday.

Wednesday will be another sunny and very breezy day with a high of 56 degrees.

The next chance for rain comes on Thursday morning with clearing skies later in the day.

The weekend is looking to start warm with highs in the 60s on Saturday, with a chance of rain, before it likely turns sharply colder with the most frigid weather of the season early next week.
