MASSACHUSETTS — After a relatively cool and humidity-free day Monday, heat and humidity will return to Massachusetts starting Tuesday, according to forecasts.

Last week's dangerous heat sent heat indices into the 100s in some areas, and was very unpleasant in places that didn't even get that hot. The thermometer will reach into the high 80s on Tuesday before verging back into the 90s on Wednesday this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The key difference: humidity. Tuesday won't be very humid, making the heat a little more bearable. It'll be humid Wednesday, but afternoon thunderstorms will sweep away the heavy air by the evening hours, according to forecasts.

"While we do expect scattered showers and t-storms to develop in the afternoon, better chance will likely be during Wednesday night," the National Weather Service said in a Monday forecast.

The south coast and Cape will be cooler, as usual, with temperatures only reaching the low 80s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wednesday's storms will usher in cooler weather across the state, with Thursday and Friday resembling Monday's seasonable temperatures and mild humidity, according to forecasts.
