How Much Rain Did Ida Dump In Massachusetts?

The unofficial rain totals are in from the overnight storm, with one Massachusetts city recording nearly 10 inches of rainfall.

MASSACHUSETTS — And the winner is New Bedford!

The south coast city recorded 9.5 inches of rain as the remnants of Hurrican Ida rolled through Massachusetts Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to unofficial totals released by the National Weather Services. That was more than any other Massachusetts town or city.

Most towns saw at least two inches of rainfall, according to the unofficial reports. That led to road closures, flooding and power outages.

But it could have been worse: The National Severe Storms Laboratory estimated that one inch of rain is equal to about 13 inches of snowfall. If overnight temperatures had been about 50 degrees cooler, most parts of Massachusetts would have been walloped with more than six-and-a-half feet of snow, or about three times the accumulation of the Blizzard of '78.
