MASSACHUSETTS — This week's stifling heat will exit Friday with the arrival of severe storms during the afternoon hours, according to forecasts.

The National Weather Service says a cold front will enter the region this afternoon, sweeping away the heat, but bringing in storms.

"A backdoor cold front moves in from northeast to southwest Friday, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms, but also breaking the dangerous heat and humidity for much of the region. Thunderstorms will be focused across western-central Massachusetts and Connecticut, where some of the storms may become severe and also result in a localized flash flooding," the weather service said in a Friday morning forecast.

Friday's severe weather will be close to what much of the state saw Thursday night — and what will likely appear on Saturday afternoon, and again on Sunday. The weekend storms may be more isolated, forecasts indicate, and heat near 90 will return Sunday after a brief dip into the low 80s on Saturday.

Expect Friday's storms to arrive between noon and 9 p.m., the weather service said.
