What's Open, Closed In Massachusetts On Thanksgiving

This is the year to call ahead before you head out on Thanksgiving Day.

One thing is for sure if you're going places this Thanksgiving: Call ahead to make sure it's open. More stores than ever are likely to be closed this Turkey Day in Massachusetts due to the state's blue laws, a crippling labor shortage, COVID-19 concerns and a growing allowance to let employees spend the holidays at home with their families.

Generally speaking, gas stations, pharmacies and convenience stores will be open on Thanksgiving. But again, call ahead.

You could be out of luck if you forgot the special side dish. Most — maybe all — major grocery stores appear to be closed Thanksgiving Day and will reopen Friday morning. Same goes for liquor stores.

Most retail stores will be closed, though that won't stop people from lining up for Black Friday. Different stores and malls will reopen at different times — they can start as early as midnight, but many wait until 5 or 6 a.m.

Banks are also closed on Thanksgiving in Massachusetts, as are federal buildings and government offices.
