ARLINGTON, MA — The Arlington Council on Aging (COA) will pilot a parking program for seniors age 65 and older with the goal of giving relief to seniors while they are shopping in town or visiting the Community Center.

The pilot, proposed by Council on Aging Executive Director Kristine Shah, was passed by the Select Board on June 26.

"The committee of residents that lead the drive behind this initiative worked hard and provided a compelling and persuasive case as to why we needed a Senior Parking Permit Program in Arlington." Shah said. “The information and research they provided made presenting the proposal to the Select Board a pleasure. I’m glad that the senior community in Arlington received this win”

The COA plans to share details about the roll-out of the pilot program in August, with September dates as the first opportunities for residents to get their stickers. If approved for a sticker, the following will apply to participants:

  • Limit of one sticker per address given to Arlington Residents age 65 and older, proof of address, age and vehicle registration required when applying.
  • No charge for sticker
  • Vehicles that have this sticker affixed would:
    • Not be charged while parked at metered spots or in municipal lots within Arlington and not be ticketed for exceeding time limits along Maple Street and Academy Street (as long as vehicles are legally parked otherwise)
  • Parking stickers would not allow for overnight parking in any situation
  • Parking stickers cannot be removed to share, must be affixed to one vehicle
