Local Government Initiating Sewer Water Inspection Program

The program will reduce the amount of groundwater entering the sewer system

ARLINGTON— The Town of Arlington is wrapping up its program to reduce the amount of groundwater and rainwater entering the sewer system. The Sanitary Sewer Cleaning and Inspection Project has been ongoing since Jan. 11, and will end Feb. 10.

Town consultants Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc. and their sub-consultant, New England PipeCleaning Company (NEPCCO), have been conducting sewer pipe cleaning and inspections to identify sources of infiltration and inflow. The area included in this project includes various sewer line segments throughout the Town.

The sewer project requires a truck with a water jet to clean the pipe. Sometimes a vacuum is created inside the sewer pipe, which may cause some water to be pulled out of plumbing traps. If you have any odors in your building, flush the toilets or pour water into sinks and showers to refill the plumbing trap and eliminate the scent. This has been an ongoing project divided into multiple phases, beginning in 2016. Access to driveways and Town's right of ways are not affected.

Updates to this piece will be provided in the coming hours with news of how the project is going.
