Snow Removal Operations January 28
Public Works continues major snow removal operations across Arlington. Roadways are still narrow and there is much more to be done including clearing sidewalks along Town owned properties, clearing crosswalks on Mass. Ave. and around routes to schools. Be aware of children playing in the streets, particularly climbing on or running out from behind large snowdrifts. Parents should remind their children to be aware of plowing operations and traffic. Public Safety Officials remind residents that roadways are still narrow and to exercise caution on the roadway.
January 28 Parking Ban Lifted on Mass. Ave., Broadway 11AM
Ban stays in effect for rest of Town
The Town asks residents and businesses for their continued understanding as we all clean up after this major storm event.
During a Snow Emergency, a parking ban is in place on all streets , permitted spots, and municipal parking lots, except Russell Common lot. It is crucial to keep cars off the streets during this time to allow the Town to clear the roads. Any vehicles parked on the streets during these hours will be subject to ticketing and towing. Parking at the Russell Common Parking lot is on a first come first served basis. Cars parked here during the emergency must be moved four hour after the ban has been lifted. Parking in the lot is still OK. DPW has requested residents park cars closest to the Arlington Catholic side of the lot. Please see map here.
Storm Clean Up
After a storm it is equally important for all residents and businesses to keep public walkways clear. Other ways to help include shoveling out fire hydrants by your property or that of a neighbor and clearing any catch basins near your property. Arlington Fire Department encourages residents to adopt a neighborhood fire hydrant.
The Town would also like to remind residents as they clear public sidewalks and driveways not to move snow into the roadways in accordance with Town bylaws. If you live on a corner, clear a path from the sidewalk to the street. If not precisely on the corner, as close to the corner as you can get. Other ways to help with clean-up efforts include shoveling out fire hydrants by your property or that of a neighbor and clearing any catch basins near your property.
Other Safety Tips to Consider
- Clear exhaust vents from direct vent gas furnace systems to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Never run an automobile until exhaust pipe has been cleared of snow.
- Please check in with your neighbors who may need extra assistance.
- With the threat of more snow in the coming days, be alert for large accumulating snow build-up or snowdrifts on your roofs and take appropriate action. Read roof safety tips provided by MEMA here.
