Cahill to Host Open House Thursday Night
Five things to know - a great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Thursday, Jan. 9.
1. Warmer: All things are relative, and on Thursday it will be “warmer” than the past few days, with a high temperature in the upper-20s. The sky will be sunny with northwest wind blowing at about 10 miles per hour.
2. City Hall: Mayor Mike Cahill, who took office earlier this week, hosts an open house on Thursday night at City Hall. It runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m. where Beverly residents are invited to stop by City Hall to meet the new mayor and other elected officials. Light refreshments will be served and anyone who stops by is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation for Beverly Bootstraps as part of the inauguration week food drive. There will be collection bins outside City Council Chamber and at the City Clerk's office.

3. Skating: Top figure skaters have arrived in Boston for the weekend, just before the Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be at the TD Garden all weekend and the competition will decide the national champion and also help determine the team headed to next month’s Olympics.
4. Casinos: State officials continue to decide the future of gambling in Massachusetts, including two proposals on the north side of Boston. The state Gaming Commission meets on Thursday morning at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center where it will, among other things, decide the order of presentations to be given by resort-casino applicants scheduled for Jan. 22. Two of those applicants are on our side of Boston – at the former Monsanto Chemical Co. property in Everett and Suffolk Downs in Revere. The meeting lives streams online..
