Expert to Offer Tips for "Parenting the Inflexible Child'

Five things to know - a great way to start the day with a quick look at the events and happenings in the city.

Welcome to “5 Things,” your daily source for community events, happenings in the city and other little tidbits of information. Here are five things you need to know on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

1. Cold: Tuesday will be a shock to the system after Monday’s balmy temperatures. The high temperature will be in the mid-teens and the wind chill will get as low as -4 degrees with wind blowing to 18-24 miles per hour with gusts to 37 mph. The sky will be sunny all day.

2. Clay: Clay Dreaming Pottery Studio on Cabot Street hosts its "Mommy and Me" session on Tuesday morning. It is a chance for children age 5 and under to join their parents for a chance to "capture footprints and handprints." It runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and there is no fee for children under 5.

3. Inflexible Children: Dr. J. Stuart Ablon will be the guest Tuesday night at the Beverly High School auditorium, speaking about "Parenting the Inflexible Child." The session is free and open to the public. The program, which starts at 7 p.m., will talk about "using collaborative problem solving for school refusal and other challenging behaviors." 

4. Transportation: The highway and transit projects in the Boston area, including Beverly, that will receive federal funding during the next four years will be discussed during two public sessions on Tuesday. The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization is putting on the two sessions, open to the public, from 12:30-2 p.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. at the State Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza in Boston.

5. ConsComm: The Conservation Commission meets on Tuesday night at Beverly City Hall at 7 p.m., where the commission plans to continue its review at the planned Route 128 and Brimbal Avenue improvements and for a new neighborhood that would be built behind Next Generation Children's Center on Essex Street.
