Blanket Green Line Speed Restrictions Lifted, 'Block' Slowdowns Stay

BOSTON, MA — The T has lifted global speed restrictions along the Green Line, the last remaining after the entire subway system was slowed down due to emergency track inspections.

The T on Sunday announced the Green Line would join all other lines — including the Mattapan Trolley — in a return to normal speeds. However, every line will still have "block" speed restrictions where tracks need to be examined more closely for safety issues.

"The full-line speed restriction on the Green Line has been lifted. Test trains confirmed that all speed signs are in place. Targeted block speed restrictions are now in effect on the Green, Red, Orange, Blue, and Mattapan Lines," the T said in a tweet just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

About 18 percent of Green Line tracks would still see some kind of speed restriction following Sunday's announcement, the T said.

On March 9, the T ordered speed restrictions of 10 to 25 mph along all subway lines. Those slowdowns were lifted on March 10 for the Red, Blue and Orange lines. Interim General Manager Jeff Gonneville said he made the call to slow all trains down until inspections of all tracks could be completed. The order came after a state Department of Public Utilities inspection of Red Line tracks days earlier.
